| Why are they trying so hard to distract us?
Investor's Business Daily, most recently responsible for pressuring Target to get rid of CDs with a Che Guevara image because it showed support for totalitarianism (although not pressuring Target to stop using Chinese labor), had issues with Pelosi's head scarf. Why? Where in reality do these people - from the editorial boards, to the talking heads, all of them - think they are, in comparison to the rest of us, that would excuse their behavior as anything but unethical, dishonest, and brutishly cynical? Perhaps they are in a place where conscience is so easily bought and sold that they can pretend at decency and fool themselves convincingly. But they are not in a place from which the truth will ever venture out, not on purpose anyway. Truth may escape on occasion, and usually in broken parts, seemingly unrelated to a larger narrative, but by and large, this place of so called mainstream journalism is a wasteland, decadent and collapsing under its own Faustian deal.
Microsoft, Carnegie Mellon Establish IT Center
Pittsburgh, PA, USA, March 27, 2007 -- Microsoft Corp. and Carnegie Mellon University announced the creation of the Microsoft Carnegie Mellon Center for Computational Thinking. The center was made possible through a three-year, $1.5 million grant from Microsoft. The center represents a long-term collaboration between Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon's Computer Science Department and will support research in emerging areas of computer science, particularly those that can influence the thinking of other disciplines. "Increasingly, scientists and researchers rely on computer science to enable them to sift through massive amounts of data and find breakthroughs that could provide new insights into the human body, the earth we live on and even the universe," said Rick Rashid, senior vice president of Microsoft Research.
Could storage robot take over the planet?
Ever since Arnold Schwarzenegger asked those punks for their clothes, their boots and motorbike, we have been a little wary of robots. So the news that a company has produced a robot that can automatically sense and configure hard drives to use as storage for your computer was met with a little trepidation. Claimed by the company as the world's first storage robot, the Drobo from Data Robotics can automatically detect and format up to four 3.5-inch Sata drives of any capacity. Intelligent software inside the robot looks after all the data and disk swapping. When the robot appliance is connected to a PC or Mac via its USB 2.0 connection, the computer sees the unit as one drive. There are also LED lights of different colours all over the show that tell you what's happening with the robot: green is ok, yellow indicates a drive low on space, while a red flashing light warns of disk failure.
