Japanese Government Issue Laws For Robots!

When the science fiction writer Isaac Asimov envisioned a future shared by human beings and robots, he predicted that the mechanical servants of tomorrow would be safely controlled by only three simple laws.

But when Japans notoriously zealous bureaucracy looks into the future, it sees robots enmeshed in miles of red tape.

Three laws, the robotics experts say, are nowhere near sufficient to ensure human safety in a world where cleaning, carrying and even cooking could one day be performed by machines. So the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has drafted a hugely complex set of proposals for keeping robots in check.

The document, entitled Draft Guidelines to Secure the Safe Performance of Next Generation Robots, was obtained by The Timesyesterday.

Three brothers, three solid winners

Triplet brothers from Bok High School in South Philadelphia found themselves in a three-way tie for the Philadelphia School District's Senior of the Month honor.

Juan Antonio, Juan Alberto and Juan Carlos Caraballo were honored by the Philadelphia School Reform Commission yesterday for their individual academic and extracurricular achievements.

Commission chairman James Nevels called the brothers "very unique winners."

While at Bok, the trio amassed A's and B's. Since 10th grade, they have been involved with White-Williams Scholars, a program that provides stipends for school supplies, transportation and testing fees for high-achieving, low-income students in the city's public high schools.

And each is busy with other activities. Juan Antonio is the captain of Bok's robotics club and manages all the girls' sports teams.

Laser Equipped 50 Foot Michael Jackson Robot

The Swirling Brain sent us a Michael-Jackson-robot news item so weird, we at first assumed it was an April Fools joke, but it appears to be for real (or at least as real as anything is in Michael Jackson's universe). The eccentric pop personality may have a 50 foot tall "robot" constructed in his own image. Laser beams would "shoot out of it", making it visible from passing aircraft. The robot would be constructed in Vegas where it would promote his shows (and perhaps use it's lasers to destroy those who don't attend?). Drawings of the robot were prepared by fashion designer Andre Van Pier, who has designed other futuristic props such as spacesuits worn by U2 members during a benefit concert. How would Jackson pay for his 50 foot robot doppelganger? There is speculation that Paul McCartney may invest in the project to get back part of the 25 percent of the Beatles catalog still owned by Jackson.
